Thomas Bantock, Cost Controller and Business Partner

Thomas shares how his work placement year at Mercedes-Benz UK has set him up for a future career

What’s your current role at Mercedes-Benz?

“I’m a Cost Controller and Business Partner within the Finance department, coming towards the end of my placement year here at Mercedes-Benz UK. I study Accounting and Finance at the University of Leeds, so I wanted industry experience to develop my understanding of the sector so I can take this into my final year at university.”

What do you enjoy about your role?

“The learning and development I’ve gained has been invaluable, as well as the experience and the responsibility I’ve been given.  My whole team are great – I’m still at university so have had assignments to do and some of them know what it’s like to balance university assignments with everyday work.  We have regular catch ups so they can see how I’ve been getting on.

“I’ve had many conversations with colleagues in different roles to learn about their journeys to Mercedes-Benz and it’s made me realise that there’s never one set path to achieving your goals.”

“I’ve developed personally and professionally and I’m more confident going into other opportunities”

What brought you to Mercedes-Benz?

“I always knew a placement year was an option and to have an opportunity at a globally-known brand like Mercedes-Benz has been incredible.  I sent off my cover letter and a CV and completed a formal application process: the same process as if I was applying for a permanent job, so the real-world experience started straight away.

“The culture at Mercedes-Benz is great.  Everyone is warm and welcoming, giving me the support I need, when I need it.  I work with a lot of key stakeholders who took the time to welcome me when I joined, allowing me to build important working relationships.

“I would definitely recommend a placement year if the option is available.  I’ve developed both personally and professionally and I’m now more confident knowing I’ve had real-world experience with a premium brand.”
